Is “Retarded” Retarded Or The Newest “R” Word?

Ann Coulter has gotten some big time hammering for her use of the word “retarded” in her Tweet the other day.  Not just by the bomb throwers on the Left who enjoy hating Conservatives so much that they drool at the thought, but by some on the Right who are and/or claim to be Conservatives.  Personally, I think it’s much ado about nothing.

I understand what these conservative people are saying — I just don’t agree.

But honestly, it’s just word.  Retarded isn’t a curse word.  It’s not a foul word used to describe “womanly parts” that Democrats seem to think women now vote with (having Early voted yesterday, I can promise you, I saw NO woman voting with those parts, but maybe they were all Republicans).  Retarded also isn’t the “F Bomb” that Leftist like Bob Beckel (gosh only knows why he’s still on FNC) love to throw into their conversations.

It’s just a word that some have decided is ‘offensive’ — as if it were the ‘F bomb’, the ‘C bomb’, the ‘N bomb’ or the “constitution” bomb, which now “offends” some people.  “Overly sensitive”?  HECK, YES!

I can be a bit ornery, I admit — I don’t like other people dictating to me, what I can drink nor in what size cup.  I can make those decisions just fine — that’s defined as personal freedom and not illegal.  I also don’t appreciate people sitting around in their ‘ivory towers’ or Mom’s basement and thinking up words they choose to classify as “offensive”.   We also have something called freedom of speech (excluding all those really nasty curse words that shouldn’t be thrown at people because someone is too ignorant to find a descent word).

Retarded simply means slow, slower than others and someone who was most likely born with a handicap.  Not “mentally challenged” — more phoney terms dreamed up by the highly offendable, to tell the rest of us, what we’re ‘allowed’ to say.  For the most part, it’s all foolish dribble.  A midget is a midget, a dwarf a dwarf. . . “little people” is really on the top of the Foolish Things People Say List.  Along with retarded

There’s little mocking of the handicapped (not “challenged”) any longer.  People learned quickly that they’d get called all those nasty names we were told were so  . . . . . .   “offensive”.  And by the same folks that demand not to be ‘offended’.  Go figure.

Retarded has a definition and you won’t find ‘challenged’ any where in it.  But it can be a challenge to carry on a normal conversation with an easily offendable liberal, who of course, is so much wiser’n smarter than anyone else in the room.  Just ask them.

    First off, I hear the word retarded weekly.
    FYI: In an on-line slang dictionary it means “bad, of poor quality” http://onlineslangdictionary.com/meaning-definition-of/retarded

    Having a child with severe mental retardation makes me sensitive, I admit. It is not a political issue for me. Hearing the word retarded or retaaahd, (I’m from the east coast) does not phase my daughter due to her being a “retard” and all, and it is not always used to address her but, instead used to get a laugh or for messing around with a friend, or trying to insult someone. It’s my young son who is hearing it from adults and kids alike. How must he feel? I see that he is upset by it at times but he is learning to deal with it. I know, I know; he needs to “buck up” and “get over it” and not be such a “pussy” for feeling like a “f’n retard” because he can’t handle someone using a simple word; a word to describe something stupid, or bad, or gross,wrong, inappropriate, or someone with opposing views or beliefs . Whatever. If you need to use it go ahead. We all have freedom of speech but, equality can be hard to come by.
    Just don’t say that it isn’t offensive because it is.
    And for the record, my son is neither a Republican or Democrat..

    There’s nothing to be ashamed about, offended over or embarrassed by the word ‘retarded’. It’s a descriptive word to describe a condition of retardation. Only in recent years, has the Left decided to define and redefine what words mean and reconstruction new words in some phony ‘sensitivity’ exercise. It’s an act of foolishness to create new words because a few have decided to be offended and control all speech.
    I get ‘offended’ by a lot of things I hear and read — as adults, we deal with it and move along. We teach our children how to response, that they should be hurt or angry — growing up and becoming responsible adults is a task, but we should be able to do so without controlling all around us.
    Using the “f- bomb” is NOT “offensive” to some people – but I find that very distasteful. Using curse words regarding God and Christian beliefs, is “offensive”.– but not to everyone.. I don’t demand that vulgarity be removed from museums because a nitwit puts a cross in urine.

    Everyone is going to be offended by something — being using the word retarded shouldn’t be one of them! Of course, kids can be particularity mean — but would it be any kinder of the child were called a “jerk!”? What about being called “fat” or “hey fatty!” – should be ban that word too? There are many way to insult and be rude to other human beings… but we can’t control all others, only ourselves and our response.

    Wow. On other sites where I speak to this situation, I am met with a with a Tidal Wave (sorry, another politically incorrect term) of attacks (they want to torture Ann to death, too). It’s just common sense to me. A breath of fresh air, this. One of those other places had a lead-in article headed with the claim that no one whatsoever was on Ann’s side. Sigh. I’m on your side big time, Ann. (Call me up!)

      It’s ridiculous, all this PC crap. Every few years, someone decide they want to be called something different.

      Lets take “midgets” for example. Now they want to be called “little people/persons”.

      Or “blacks”. Call them “African Americans” !!!! That’s stupid. How the hell do I know where they came from. Hmmmmm…. I think I want to be called a “Scottish/German American”, even though it’s probably been 3-5 generations since my ancestors came from there.

        LOL I totally agree… we need a play book to KNOW what is and isn’t “offensive” from week to week. It’s foolish. “African American” is another thing I find idiotic and silly. There a plenty of Africans who are WHITE — if you insist on being called out on skin tone, go with black. But for gosh sake — why all the division?!! More stupidity.

        I am sure Politico is up for running a PC site to tell us how to think and talk and not talk. We can check our phone before speaking. I already know that we may not say “Quadroon” when referencing the Prez, that it’s “no no” if we want to say “One Fourth Slavetrading Type Arab on his Alleged Dad’s Side”, and it’s fine to say “Behaloed First Gay President”, but “Second” is not nice since the Prez tells Politico he does not want to talk about President James Buchanan and that He (O) is in fact Number One.

We’re rapidly losing food products and containers they’ve already banned – guess 32 oz cups are now collector items worth big $$$$$$?
